Augustine and The Problem of Evil Essay - 886 Words

In the beginning, God created the world. He created the earth, air, stars, trees and mortal animals, heaven above, the angels, every spiritual being. God looked at these things and said that they were good. However, if all that God created was good, from where does un-good come? How did evil creep into the universal picture? In Book VII of his Confessions, St. Augustine reflects on the existence of evil and the theological problem it poses. For evil to exist, the Creator God must have granted it existence. This fundamentally contradicts the Christian confession that God is Good. Logically, this leads one to conclude evil does not exist in a created sense. Augustine arrives at the conclusion that evil itself is not a formal thing, but the†¦show more content†¦This means that both the fish owner also owns a cat, and that God at some point had to create this evil force. Given this light, Augustine’s argument does not stand. However, he includes with his solution the idea that this corruption is not just a material or spiritual transformation, from one kind of existence to another but an erasure, toward nonexistence. (7.12.8) Thus, Augustine merely reframes the problem of good vs. evil as creation vs. uncreation. This realization undermines the necessity of an evil force, source, power or form that is, (i.e. existing as a result of divine creation) because these terms refer to everything that is not. To Augustine, an evil act is one that moves any member of creation towards exclusion from God’s universe. If a being with free will elects to move away from God for a temporal end, they are moving towards corruption or death and unleashing this force on the world around them. Once a body becomes in entirely corrupted it has no existence whatsoever, it is irrelevant to this reality and we can only imagine it based on the imprint left before it was no more. This is the ultimate death; complete exclusion from God’s universe and Augustine contrasts it with the ultimate Good, which is complete inclusion with God’s universe. Answer: One of the fastest growing economy in the world is that of India where there has been a drastic increase in the overseas ventures, outsourcing activities and foreign business investments in the country. However, there are few management challenges in the cultural environment of India that create hurdles for the management of the organization and its operations (Thomas and Peterson 2014). There are strict rituals and protocols in the country with a strong structure of hierarchy that is based on the title of the job. Because of this hierarchy in the business community, the managers tend to have a paternalistic attitude towards the employees which is absent in the culture of the western organizations. The culture in India is polychronic where the people change priorities that are dependent on the importance. This relaxes the punctuality and this is in contrast to the western business culture where the global organizations strictly adhere to the deadlines and quick decision making abilities (Kapur and Janakiram 2015). Therefore, the management of these global companies struggles to cope up with the Indian culture while conducting business in the country as they fail to control the time limits. On the contrary, Singapore does not face such cultural management challenges as the country is highly influenced by the cultures of both the west and the east by combining the western technology with the eastern philosophy. The culture of India is very much different from the western culture that raises unintentional challenges for the business persons from the west as the communications between the hierarchy levels is rarely passed over, especially from the lower levels to the superior ones. Culture, Socialization and Normative Behavior The Indian culture describes the people and their way of living and the culture differs from one place to another throughout the country. Several cultures are amalgamated into the Indian culture that includes its cuisines, philosophy and religions that have left a profound impact throughout the world. All the relationships follow a hierarchical structure due to the influences of Hinduism (Budhwar and Debrah 2013). Indians prefer to carry out commercial and business activities with their known counterparts as the relationships are built upon the pillars of respect and trust. Unlike Singapore, business does not follow a strict chain of commands in India and rather, third party introducers are involved in the commercial relationships to gain immediate credibility. India is recognized as the land of festivals and a harmonious co-existence of people belonging from different religions is a factual manifestation of the rich traditions and culture of the country. Socialization in India is much more fluid in India as compared with the western world and it is a common practice to suggest another get together upon departing while meeting for the first time. Traditions of exchange of gifts are absent in a get together however, certain etiquettes are followed like avoiding of black colors as they are considered unlucky. Social interdependence is a prevalent theme in the life of the Indians and people are deeply involved with their groups and communities and do not prefer to stay alone (Shah 2014). The normative behavior of India starts with the greeting gesture saying Namastay' which means The God in my heart greets the God in yours.' This gesture is used everywhere following the hierarchical pattern where the inferiors are offering the greeting either to their subordinates or superiors. While sitting, it should always be considered that the feet should not be pointing towards any religious images kept on the wall, an altar or at another person. T hese normative behaviors are unique to India. Descriptive Models of Culture Among the oldest civilizations of the world, Indian culture is one that dates back to about 4,500 years ago (Ardichvili et al. 2012). Significant advances have been made by the Indians in the fields of medicine (Ayurveda), mathematics (invention of zero) and architecture (Taj Mahal). According to the descriptive model, the culture of India can be segmented into religion, food, art and architecture, clothing and celebrations and customs. The language of India is highly diversified wherein Hindi is the language that is used throughout the country. Other leading languages of the country include Tamil, Bengali, Marathi and Telugu. Buddhism and Hinduism are considered to have evolved in India which is the fourth and third largest religions. India is also considered one of the biggest Islamic nations of the world. The cuisine of India is influenced by several countries and is known basically for its liberal use of spices and herbs. Pulses, rice and wheat, are the staple Indian diet and the foods are rich in spices and curries that include cardamom, coriander and ginger (Cole and Cole 2016). The most striking illustration of Indian architecture is the Taj Mahal and also there are several ancient temples. The popular dance forms of India consists of the Odissi, Kathak and Bharata Natyam are based on the mythological themes and literature. Colorful silk sarees forms the traditional clothing of Indian women and along with that, dhoti and kurta form the traditional clothing of the men. The most important festivals of India are Diwali and Holi which are the festivals of lights and colors respectively. Cultural and Institutional Environments The basic style of business in India has remained same since its independence and most of them are the family controlled business. The leading business families of the country are Reliance, Tata and Birla where the major posts of management are held by the family members who are responsible. It is also a part of the cultural management of India that the economy has the largest share occupied by the non-corporate sector (McFarlin and Sweeney 2014). The service and manufacturing industries are managed by the non-corporate sector that mostly consists of the family business. The institutional environment also plays a decisive role in Indian business as the language of business is a mixture of the local language with English, especially in the urban parts of the country. Though Hindi is the predominant language in the country, yet the state dialects are also involved in the commercial processes, especially in the rural parts. Therefore, a business negotiator from a western country has to be well versed with the language of the region where he expects to trade. Since the middle class is the prime consumer of goods and services in the country, they believe in the Indian culture that will make the Western multinationals to adopt themselves to the tastes of the country. Cultural Complexities and Contradictions There are several cultural complexities throughout India due to the diversities of the caste groups, class and religion that influence the society in terms of economic, regional, linguistic and ethnic multiplicity. The north and south Indian difference are the most significant that is prominent in the systems of marriage and kinship. The Indian society is considered to be multifaceted that is one of the widest single nation variety and there are remarkable changes occurring in the contemporary Indian culture that is affecting the different socioeconomic groups and religions (Moran, Abramson and Moran 2014). This has brought about several contradictions in the modernity of India. Unlike the western states, boys are favored by the parents in India over girls as they continue to reside with their parents and support them in their old age. Whereas girls, they drain the resources of the family in the form of dowry and weakens the economy. As they depart to the home of their husbands, they cannot provide support to their aging parents. However, these concepts are changing and dowry is getting abolished and love marriages are getting recognition. A person might shake hands with his business partner and might kneel down before his elders for receiving their blessings. Therefore, the complexities and contradictions of cultural norms have to be observed by Western business persons while establishing trade relations in India. Cultural Diversity and Multiculturism India is the best example of cultural diversity and multiculturism as people here speak 1599 minor languages and 122 major languages (Stock, Strecker and Bieling 2016). The beauty of the country lies in its unity in diversity and its constitution promotes the pluralistic tradition by assigning equal duties, privileges and rights to every citizen of the country. Clear distinctions are notable in the rituals, religion practices, food habits, language and dress in the largest democracy of the world that is based on cultural diversity and multiculturalism. It is important for any organization in India to respect the cultural diversity as it helps the organization to compete, develop and grow the human talent and to retain its greatest resource. India has started to produce categories of cultural markets on a global scale for developing globalized technical workers and linking them with the global economy in technology-mediated and novel ways. Multicultural global management practices have been placed in practice for managing the multinational workforces that have helped the Indian organizations to govern the works that are outsourced to the offshore clients. Two Godesses and A Woman Essay Throughout history, women have been looked at as the lesser gender, mortal or immortal. They are always stereotyped as not equally important as men. I strongly disagree with this idea, especially in the book The Odyssey. In The Odyssey, Homer suggests that the women characters in the book are more important than the characters of men despite their stereotype. He portrays this through the characters of Penelope, Kalypso, and Kirke. They are important because they are a large part of the story. The most important woman in this book is Penelope, mainly because of her guile and intelligence. Her guile and intelligence make her important because they put her at a much-needed mental advantage over the suitors. An example of her guile and intelligence is the instance of the shroud she wove for Laertes. When Antinoos is talking to Telemakhos about how Telemakhoss mother, Penelope, tricked the suitors by weaving and unweaving the shroud to avoid marrying a suitor, he says, We have mens hearts ; she touched them; we agreed. So every day she wove on the great loom- but every night by torchlight she unwove it; and so for three years she deceived the Akhains.(2:111-114). As a result of doing this, Penelope delayed having to marry one of the suitors for almost four years. It gave Odysseus more time to get home. Another example of Penelopes guile and intelligence is when she tested Odysseus when she was first reunited with him. She tested him by telling Eurykleia to make up his bed and to put it outside the bedchamber. In this quote Penelope is telling Eurykleia to move Odysseus bed. Make up his bed for him, Eurykleia. Place it outside the bedchamber my lord made with his own hands. Pile the big bed with fleeces, rugs, and sheets of the purest linen. (23:202-205). Upon hearing this, Odysseus claimed that his great bed couldnt be moved because it was connected to a living tree. He knew this, because he had built it many years before. Then Penelope knew it was he because only th e real Odysseus could have known that. Penelope is more important than other men because she settles some problems temporarily and some problems permanently.Kalypso, the goddess-nymph is also a key woman in the Odyssey. She is important because of the fact that Odysseus slept with her for seven years. When, Odysseus is telling King Anlkinoos about his wanderings, he says, Though I have been detained long by Kalypso, loveliest among goddesses, who held me in her smooth caves, to be her hearts delight, (9:32-34). This is significant because for seven years of being held captive by Kalypso, Odysseus is sleeping with her for the whole time. Meanwhile, back at Ithaca, Penelope successfully stayed faithful to her husband for ten years. Kalypso is basically one of the two women that Odysseus slept with during his wanderings. Kalypso is more important than other men because Odysseus slept with her for seven years. If Penelope ever found out, it could possibly be a problem for Odysseus. She is also important because she was most of Odysseus journey home.Another vital woman in The Odyssey is the goddess-enchantress Kirke. She is important because of the amount of time Odysseus and his men spent at her castle and all the information she gave Odysseus regarding the journey he must make in order to get home to Ithaka. Kirke describes what they will encounter on the sea on their way to Ithaka. This is important because there is many things they encountered at sea and they would not of known what to do if it wasnt for her. When Kirke is about to tell Odysseus what is in his path, she says, Listen with care to this, now, and a god will arm your mind. (12:46-47). This is important because if she hadnt given this advice, everyone, including Odysseus would have died. Kirke is also important because of the amount of time they spent there. In this quote Odysseus is telling the story of Kirke and the amount of time they spent there.So day by day we lingered, feasting long on roasts and wine, until a year we grew fat My shipmates one day summoned me and said: Captain shake off this trance, and think of home if home indeed awaits us (10:515-522). The significance of this is the time factor. If Odysseus wanderings were ten years this was definitely a large amount of time. Kirke is more important than other men because Odysseus slept with her, which could possibly be a problem for him in the future. She is also important because if she did not tell Odysseus what he was going to encounter, he would have never made it home alive.In the book The Odyssey, Homer proves that men characters are less significant than the women characters like Penelope, Kirke, and Kalypso, even though women are stereotyped to be inferior to men.In a way, this idea relates to women in the workplace. A lot of times women are paid less than a man for doing the same job. Given what Homer has taught us about the equality of women shouldnt we treat them the same. It was composed in 1830 as programme music. The piece starts off at a relatively slow pace at the start, but gradually gathers momentum until it is quite fast and lively and so I would assume the tempo is somewhere between Allegro and Vivacissimo by the end of the movement. This change in tempo is a common characteristic of the romantic period which had previously not been seen in music. Also, as common place with much romantic music this piece has a very large dynamic range and Berlioz uses it to full extent with sudden changes from things like mezzo piano to mezzo forte. This marriage did not last long and they soon separated. Berlioz travelled over much of Europe during his career and during his second tour of Russia became very ill. He died not long after in Paris on the 8th March 1869.

Establishing an ECL culture in China Electronic Communications Ltd. (ECL) had decided to start business in China and to form a relationship of common prosperity with Chinese people. The company knew that there was major progress to be made, but there were also risks and challenges. One of these was the management of cultural differences. An issue the management was whether it should adapt ECLs management practice to the Chinese culture or to establish ECLs global management policies in China. Successful cultural alignment is an important element for multinational organizations. Electronic Communications Ltd (ECL), like many other companies entering foreign markets, is faced with how to adequately incorporate their corporate culture with the Chinese national culture. Situational analysis Cultural issues were a basic problem to overcome and the must important because it will create the daily operations environment and it is a critical success factor for multinational organizations. Electronic Communications Ltd (ECL), like many other companies entering foreign markets, is faced with this situation. ECL management must determine if it is more prudent to adapt to the Chinese culture or to apply their western-centric management practices to ECL China. However, many Chinese staff thought the systems went wrong and delayed the decision making process. This contradiction shows that in some instances Chinese staff did in fact want an opportunity to be proactive. ECL should be create a more flexible solving structure that encourages Chinese staff to be more proactive without forgetting the issues which can rise during conflict resolution. Also ECL management claims that the Chinese staff lacked the expected teamwork capability. This problem was attributed by some expatriates to the education system in China, because e the system encourages a more individualist culture. The face issue in the Chinese society was a combination of dignity, self-respect, prestige and social standing, as perceived by others, an example of face is when a manager criticize his employee could cause the person to lose face especially in from of others. This so called losing, face is detrimental to a working relationship in certain cultures. However we can conclude that ECL has a very strong cultural adaptation with its employees. ECL had a successful combination of training and systems to form the technical skills in the Chinese workplace. There were doubt as to the replacement of the expatriates could be completed on time and the Chinese employees were given the opportunity to get promoted within the company the senior management positions were still dominated by the expatriates. This represented another challenge for ECL that the expatriates did not have the full respect from their staff. Chinese staff had difficulty accepting that many expatriate managers do not have the same level of technical expertise that is expected of the staff. Further, expatriates were often viewed as not fully committed to China and would relegate decision making responsibility to the home office. This would often cause a delay in productivity. However, China has a very productive and the coaching program that was developed to pair Chinese staff with experienced expatriates was implemented to create a formal mechanism to transfer knowledge and cultural information. This lowered the level of animosity growing towards ECL management; it was a better decision for ECL to promote expatriate managers to China with a high level of technical experience who are able of making decisions in a short amount of time. An additional challenge that ECL had was attracting and keeping local talent. ECL wanted to replace expatriates in a short period time but they are having a difficult time hiring competent Chinese managers. The demand for competent personnel was growing and more skilled personnel were needed. A critical issue encountered was the emigration impeding success is that many talented potential hires leave the country. Those that remain receive handsome compensation packages from Chinese owned firms. A lot of well prepared personnel were getting better offers; ECL also has to compete for the remaining individuals amongst other firms that are beginning to enter the Chinese market. ECL must remember when seeking out talent that respect for elders plays a significant role in high power orientation countries and young managers may not receive the respect or support that they need to be effective. An additional issue was the competition added by China entering the World Trade Organization. This caused a lot of investors to China and start investing creates an environment of intense competition. Perhaps, ECL could use current employees to recruit younger family members that can be groomed within the country. G ECL must assimilate their management practices into Chinese culture. Regardless of how hard ECL works to indoctrinate employees into the ECL culture, their future talent pool will be generated from the Chinese culture. For this reason is important for the management to determine how the cultural issues may be faced within ECL. The Chinese work force will be a key factor to ECL success. The company needs to get more involved in to how to handle a direct dialogue and completely adapt to the Chinese culture in order to earn their trust respect and be successful. Another solution for the companys recruiting effort is recruit family members and groom them into the ECL culture. And finally, the ECL can continue the training from ECL University which will demonstrate the ECL culture while familiarizing it to ECL China. Summary of Issues The Chinese culture shows a significant degree of collectivism- The Chinese cultures have group oriented vision. Expatriates failed to develop the relations that are prerequisites for creating a harmonious and respectful working environment that would allow the cultural integration. The action to be taken by ECL is that management should focus on creating tasks that will contribute to building relationships with ECL China. Expatriate managers expect associates to be more proactive- ECL should adopt a more flexible problem solving structure that encourages Chinese staff to be more proactive while considering the issues of the conflict resolution process. Expatriate managers want results and Chinese staff wants to build relationships to get to the results. Chinese staff wants to develop a trust based relationship prior to executing a contract while the US approach is to finalize details and clarify. ECL manager should acknowledge that the Chinese work ethics correlates directly to the Chinese national culture and thus must be embraced within ECL practices. Expatriate managers provided feedback to Chinese employees who perceived the feedback to be a direct criticism. Management need to negotiation and regular meetings and encourage the dialogue. Expatriates did not receive the full respect from their staff. For the Chinese staff was hard accepting that expatriates because they were viewed as not fully committed to China because they would relegate decision responsibility the company and that they did not have the same level of expertise. The coaching program was developed to pair Chinese staff with experienced expatriates was implemented to create a formal mechanism to transfer knowledge and culture. A solution could to promote expatriate managers to the China with a high level of technical experience who are comfortable making critical decisions in a short amount of time. ECL is having trouble attracting and securing local talent. Essay --

On Friday November 15, 2013, I attended a concert that I found very interesting. It took place at 7:30 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. The group performing was the Erie Chamber Orchestra but as a special the Slippery Rock University Concert Choir was also there. During the performance I attended, two pieces were performed. The first was a Mozart piece by the name of Symphony No. 41 or Jupiter. The second and final was the Lord Nelson Mass composed by Joseph Haydn. In this concert, the two performances differed greatly unlike the last performance that I went to. The previous one that I attended had music that all sounded very similar to me. That could just be my lack of experience with American music, especially music that was composed hundreds of years ago. This time, there was vocal accompaniment with the second piece which clearly made it much different than the other works that I listened to. The Lord Nelson Mass was one that I enjoyed more and I feel that is because of the choir that performed. Although it is not the type of music that I usually listen to, it is still has some more similarities than the symphony by Mozart. The Lord Nelson Mass composed by Haydn was my favorite performance of the evening. The choir immediately captured my attention and seemed to do the same for everyone else in the audience. I was very impressed by the fact that the choir was made up entirely of college students. It was also stated that some of them sing in the choir just for fun as they are not music majors. There seemed to be an appeal in the fact that the singers were mostly very young. The piece as a whole was also very enjoyable. There was a lot of contrast which I really enjoyed. The music would be very loud and then... ...orgettable. Overall, I was very impressed by the concert and I feel that the rest of the audience was also. The expectations for the members of the Chamber Orchestra are high and those were met but I feel that the expectations for the choral group were not as high. My expectations for the choir were not very high and they were immensely exceeded. The level of talent in that group was something that I was really not expecting at all. Emotionally, I was brought in by The Lord Nelson Mass and it was an interesting experience. Technically, I feel that everyone was flawless though I do not have a lot of experience in music. The type of music performed will never be my favorite; however, it is something that I can really appreciate. The concert that I attended last Friday was an interesting one where I got to have some new experiences and learn about classical music. â€Æ'

My Twelve Hours of Independence As the expansive tour bus inscribed with Arrow Stage Lines on both sides, pulled up to the station, I felt my heart leap with excitement. This was really happening to me. All this time of planning and anticipating, and now my dream was coming true! I could hardly wait to be on my own and to be away from my family for a whole week! Looking around, I could see only five other people that I knew. Four of these people were my family members and the other was a friend of mine who was going with me. The driver of the huge bus climbed down from his perch behind the wheel and introduced himself as Juan Alvarez. I loaded my luggage into the compartment below the bus, told my family goodbye, and walked up the steps of the bus. I soon met the three other people who were riding with John and me and then settled into my seat for the long bus ride to Liberty, Missouri where we would be attending the Farmland Youth Leadership Conference. The five of us were basically on our own. It was just us and the bus driver, who couldn't speak very much English. We had a lot of stops along the way to pick up other students attending the conference so we plugged in a movie and turned on the zone mode that would get us through the twelve-hour drive. After only one minor delay of our bus breaking down just outside of Denver, we had successfully picked up all of the attendees from Colorado. There were about twenty-five of us altogether. We changed drivers in Denver, then drove on towards Hays, Kansas, where we would pick up some more students. By this time, it was about 6:30 in the morning, and the bus was nearing the small town of Ellis, which is about twenty minutes outside of Hays. The movie Pure Country was playing, but I had fallen asleep long before it had started. It was just finishing when it happened. One minute I was comfortably curled up, lying across two seats and the next I was bounced into the aisle of the bus. Thankfully, John was sitting in the seat directly across from mine, so he helped me up out of the aisle and had me sit down next to him. I watched in horror as the bus sped through the grassy median and then bounced back on to the Interstate. The entire bus was in a state of confusion, as almost everybody had been asleep when the bus went off the road.

Ethics and Regulation in the Professional Asset Management Industry 11 December, 2011 Whenever a person is hired to perform a service or look after the interest of another, the question of rules for interactions and transactions behavior arises. This is particularly important for the financial industry were portfolio managers may be entrusted with portfolio value of trillions of dollars , the inherent risks associated with financial investments and the fact that portfolio managers are often exposed to ethical conflicts. Hence, it is no surprise that the financial industry is highly regulated to ensure that there is a minimum level of acceptable practice. Guidelines are built on two legs – formal legally enforceable regulations and ethical standards. Both follow the overall principle that â€Å"portfolio managers will always act in the best interest of their investors†. Legal regulations are complex often with an interaction between state and federal laws. At the very basic level they establish adequate disclosure of information related to the investment process and provide anti-fraud protections. These cover aspects like documentation, reporting, fairness, timeliness and accuracy of information. At a more complex level, regulations cover specific investments types like for example retirement / pension assets that have different risk management requirements. Following are the principal Securities Laws for the Asset management industry and their primary target user: * Securities Act of 1933 for security issuers * Securities Exchange Act of 1934 for security brokers * Investment Company Act of 1940 for mutual funds Investment Adviser Act of 1940 for advisors and private managers * Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) for retirement asset managers and fiduciaries * Pension Protection Act of 2006 for pension fund sponsors and managers Several agencies / institutions are responsible to ensure these industry regulations are managed and followed: * SEC – U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission (the main federal agency) * U. S. Department of Labor (pension plans inc luding 401 (k) plans) * NASDR – National Association of Securities Dealer rules * U. S. Commodity and Futures Trading Commission * U. S Internal Revenue Services (tax policies) These financial regulations are the â€Å"1st leg† of regulating investor/agent relationships and they provide the legally binding and enforceable framework of conduct. The â€Å"2nd leg† comprises voluntary ethical behavior standards. They follow the same overall principle of â€Å"investors come first† but describe in much more detail how the clients/investors interest must always take precedence over the interests of investment professionals and their employers. Ethical guidelines are the indispensable as they fill a void space. Policies and regulations may punish illegal behavior but cannot prevent such abuses from happening in the first place. Also while some financial transactions may not have violated any laws but could still be to the disadvantage of investors because of unethical behavior. Thus, Ethical guidelines aim to establish a self-regulating, voluntary behavior to prevent abuses before happening and to provide guidance for aspects of financial transactions not covered by formal policies. Key elements are: * act with integrity, competence, diligence, respect and in an ethical manner. * place integrity of the investment profession and interests of clients above own personal interests. * use reasonable care and exercise independent professional judgment when conducting investment analysis, recommendations and taking investment actions. This ethics code is complemented with precisely defined conduct and actions that are acceptable (or unacceptable). The Centre of Financial Markets Integrity founded by the CFA has created a comprehensive â€Å"Asset Manager Code of Professional Conduct† providing more detailed minimum standards for providing asset management services to clients. These standards extend the rules for individuals to those of entire investments firms. Of note, agents and companies strictly adhering to ethical standards may achieve higher trust and preference ratings from investors as well as employees. Therefore, it is in the own interests of financial institutes and agents to be a CFA member and follow their ethics code. However and despite these wide-ranging regulations in place investors’ interests are not always followed. Two reason fall mostly in two categories 1) Ethical dilemmas: these are situations where the â€Å"investor interest† evaluation is not straight forward, therefore posing an ethical dilemma for the agent. Examples include where an agent may occur expenses for costly company research or other expenses which may not be clearly to the benefit of the client. ) Guidelines must be put into daily practice. A policy by itself is not sufficient to achieve compliance. The responsibility is with the leadership of financial companies by creating a corporate culture that reinforces ethical behavior, by always leading with best example and by establishing a regulatory compliance framework with capability trainings, frequent internal communication, and by stric t enforcement. Closing remarks Much progress has been made in updating and raising the standards of legislation to be more comprehensive and to avoid a repetition of historical financial crisis. However, no matter how detailed regulations may be â€Å"the question really boils down to staying true both the spirit and the letter of the law. † (Carlo V. di Florio) This is the reason why ethical codes such as provided by CPA are a critical complement to legal regulations as they provide behavioral guidelines. Employers want to hire a candidate who is going to be self-motivated. Famine and Affulence Essay Famine and Affulence Essay While I was reading singer’s article I was having a hard time really understanding his point of view and grasp what he was trying to convey in the article. I personally do not share the same points or moral beliefs so it made it extremely difficult to relate to the article. I believe singer’s article is primarily about how we can make simple changes in our life styles like, not buying designer clothing for fashion and the appeal to looking cool but, rather out of necessity for warmth and protection. By looking into our self and establishing a standard for everybody that we all should give something back to famine societies whether it is 1 dollar or 100 dollars but, not to the point where you start to hurt yourself or you immediately family either just enough where you still provide sufficiently for yourself and your family but, also the care of a famine society where someone does not have the luxuries that we have or the abilities’ to care and need for them selfà ¢â‚¬â„¢s and their loved ones. His arguments are what are the moral implications of this moral situation? While at the same time he states he will not be morally neutral and argue for his moral position that he takes. Secondly he argues that if we have the power to prevent something bad from happening that we ought, morally, to do it. While singer is defending his moral stand point and hoe his beliefs are tied into his article, singer, also makes some very good counter arguments on his position with his position on them as well. Beginning his paper you get the strong scene that he has a very strong moral stand point on the power to prevent something bad to happen. If we have the power to stop something bad from happening weather it is near or far why would you choose not to? You can take something with little moral siginanifance like a wet out fit to save something with a very high siginanifance like a young boy drowning in a shallow lake or you can give to famine charities where that will feed and clothe someone for a week and provide warmth and comfort. As he mentioned weather you are near or far the point is the same but you may have a different moral standpoint if it was rather far than near. Secondly is the proposal of the drastic revision of the moral scheme. While he is not taking a neutral stand point but rather his own conclusion and while he stats that it is a moral point of view that makes us look beyond our own interests of our own society. While at the time the article was written it was not feasible for this to work but in today’s society we as a whole have the power and abilities’ to make this a very real possibility for countries and famine society’s that are still in need of help and support. Lastly singers has another point he really came off as the relative suffering and finding a permanent solution to the ever growing population and inserting a standard guide line on number, to prevent and maintain a healthy manageable population. Singers concept on m arginal utility at the moderate level is defined as giving to the society to a point where our self’s do not fall below that margin our self’s while at the same time providing a balance back to society however, it will likely stay at the high marginal utility and even though we have the means to stop and prevent and stop most bad things from happening we choose to stick to our own morality and not see the out sides. Singer also mentions duty and charity and how the two are seemingly the same and at the same time have become so different over time. Charity is something we do to help and support other who need it as well gives a scene of pride but, singer claims there is no real thing as a true charity due to all of the strings that are now attached on the other hand there is duty and that is something you are obligated to due. He mentions that they help and hurt each other because if there is too much charity they the lack of duty is prevalent and if there is lack of ch arity then the obligation of duty

For example, you may not work in layaway, but you should still know what it is in the event a customer wants to pay for an item at a later date. Having an answer to any question will set the customer at ease and keep you in control of all situations.5. Hone your communication skillsAnother key to staying in control is communicating well. This does not just mean speaking audibly, confidently, and properly. It also requi res you to be aware of your own body language. Maintain eye contact with the customer. Uncross your arms. Stand up straight. These traits convey the air of confidence that will make your customers feel as though they are in good hands.6. Find the problemWhile it is your duty to always communicate well, you cannot always expect the same from your customers. Yet it is still your job to help them. So you may have to sift through some irrelevant or confused talk to figure out what exactly your customer wants. That should be your goal, no matter how angry or garbled the language that’s coming your way.7. Read between the lines if necessaryUsually, you don’t have to be a body language expert to read your customers effectively, as customers tend express their moods clearly. Some may be tricky though. For example, a customer may ask for help with a particular work-related issue, but the real agenda is that he or she is lonely and just wants to talk to someone. In such cases, b e polite, be sensitive, but bring the conversation to as quick of an end as possible so you can get on with your duties. In other cases, customers might just be looking for a fight. Never take the bait. Bring the confrontation to as quick and polite a conclusion as possible, and if necessary, just walk away and allow security to step in before things get out of hand.8. Stay coolNo matter what the customer’s tone or problem may be, you must always greet them with professionalism. Don’t let them rattle you. Keep your cool. Get into character as if you are playing the role of the world’s greatest customer service representative- even if your main job is to stock shelves or work the register.Always remember that you are an important member of the organization and it is your job to represent the company positively, competently, and calmly whenever dealing with its customers.
